Jack, the Coffee Tastes Better When You Make It! PDF Print E-mail
Better CoffeeRecently Jack was in a local delicatessen in Philadelphia enjoying brunch with his wife Sarah. A man with a kind face and friendly attitude recognized him from the Wawa convenience store where Jack works and stopped by to say hello. The man was in the Wawa that morning for a cup of coffee, but it didn’t taste as good as when Jack is there making it. Jack thanked the man for being a regular Wawa customer and for stopping by their table to share. He then turned to his wife and said with a laugh, “Sarah, how could the coffee taste better when I make it?”

“The coffee is supplied in pre-measured pouches, the water comes out of a filtered tap, and all the coffee pots hold the same amount. How could it taste better when I make it? Maybe it’s because I wash out the coffee pots really good before I brew a new pot? That’s it; I wash the pots out better. That’s why the coffee tastes better.” Looking at the business world today, one thing is certain. Well-washed pots won’t make the coffee taste noticeably better. Technology is making products seem very much alike. It feels as if everyone is selling the same thing for the same price all with basic service. And everything is available from multiple sources. The danger is that we start to look like everyone else. What can we do to set ourselves apart? We must create an environment that gives customers a unique experience—make them feel special, that they’re important and a part of our lives. And once we do this, it becomes unique to us. It becomes something that cannot be duplicated by our competition, as it is made up of the individuals of the organization.
