I believe that all students can achieve greatness, and that the investment and guidance we provide youth today will shape both their, and our, tomorrows. There is a growing demand to prepare students to become aware of global issues and instill effective leadership skills to impact the world in a positive way. Yet the vast majority of teens throughout our world haven’t received clear instructions on how to reach success. If it is true that more than 80 percent of success in the workplace is based on interpersonal skills, then there is a tremendous need for students to develop these all important interpersonal and leadership skills.
When students develop competent communication, teambuilding, and project management skills, they are more likely to thrive academically and personally. That leaves many schools, community organizations, and youth centers asking the question: “How do we prepare our students to reach true success?”Not long ago, I was giving a motivational talk and showing the trailer of the film “Pass It On” to a group of high school students, when I realized I had a desire to provide a greater service. I shared my concern with my business partner, Mark Lillis, who also has a background in personal development. We remembered our passionate desire to make the world a better place and felt compelled to do our part. So we decided to develop a youth academy based on proven strategies from “Pass It On,” including techniques for setting goals, associating with positive people, taking action, and visualizing. The Positive Steps Mentorship and Leadership Academy was launched in the summer of 2007 in Vacaville, California. Designed to offer middle and high school students tools and strategies to improve self-confidence and academic performance, the concept of the Academy is one of innovation, combining a motivational movie with a youth development approach. Over the course of the three-day program, students are introduced to creative ways to enhance communication skills, teamwork, presentation skills, critical thinking, and goal setting.
