It began when university professor Guo Jianliang was in his seventh floor apartment looking out the window at a sudden rain shower and saw an elderly woman struggling to cross the street.
He picked up his camera and watched as a green-shirted young man, Qiu Jianfeng, rushed to shield the woman with his umbrella. A few moments later, a female passenger in a car jumped out of the vehicle and ran over to the couple, passing HER umbrella to the old woman, who was eventually seen safely home. Jianliang recorded the scene on his camera and in a matter of days the pictures were posted all over the Internet, in local papers, and on Chinese television. The response to the photos was overwhelming, and the “Love and Care Umbrella” campaign began, providing free umbrellas in places like banks, shopping malls, buses, and taxis. “Good deeds are everywhere all the time,” said Jianliang.
